Creating Fun, Joy, Smiles, and Memories for Everyone Under the Sun.
Del Sol Contributes to:
Spreading Sunshine and Good Cheer in Many Ways . . .
As quoted in Salt Lake Magazine: "Full of sunny optimism about business and life, [the people] of Del Sol do more than just cater to cruise ship passengers and fun-in-the-sun beachgoers. Staying true to their motto, 'Creating fun, joy, smiles and memories for everyone under the sun,' the company donated several tons of its products to relief efforts for [cancer research, local elementary schools, LDS Church Humanitarian Efforts and impoverished communities in Mexico]. And that's something we can all smile about."
Each year, throughout the world, whether it's in our stores directly or through our humanitarian efforts, Del Sol brightens millions of people's lives through its products and Del Sol experience.
Del Sol's mission, to create fun, joy, smiles and memories for everyone under the sun, isn't trite. It's noble and necessary. We stand for all that is good. For sunshine. For fun in the sun. For memory-filled vacations. For laughter. For joy. We do it for young and old alike. For the smiles that it brings. We know who we are, and we're proud to bring a little sunshine to so many people every day.
Tsunami Relief Effort
Del Sol was able to participate in one of the largest humanitarian aid efforts in the state of Utah, donating nearly $800,000 worth of product to the Tsunami Relief Effort in South Asia. Nearly 22,000 adult shirts and everything from tote bags and sandals to shorts and sunglasses were given to the Humanitarian Donation.
Del Sol along with the LDS Humanitarian Services and Godfrey Trucking arranged three massive donation shipments to the Hurricane Katrina victims, totaling over $640,000 in retail value. A large portion of that donation, six pallets of shirts, hats, sweatshirts, sandals, etc., also went to help struggling villages, families and orphans in Africa who live without the basic necessities of life every day. "Del Sol's mission directly relates to creating fun, joy, smiles and memories for everyone under the sun, and through these donations we continue to do that in more ways than one."
Costa Rica Donation
Jeff Pedersen served an LDS mission to Costa Rica and then went back to Costa Rica through Del Sol, wanting to give back to a country and a people who were in need. Jeff, along with two Del Sol employees who also served missions with him in Costa Rica, organized the donation with the entire company and then went to Costa Rica to deliver it personally. In an initiative together with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and in coordination with the office of the First Lady of Costa Rica, Del Sol donated 8,000 shirts, 400 tote bags, and 200 hats to approximately 8,000 needy and low-income individuals from 20 elementary schools, orphanages and rehabilitation units throughout Costa Rica. It is estimated that the donation quantity is equal to an investment of close to 27 million Costa Rican colones ($63,529 USD). "We wanted the children to know that by their being like a ray of sunshine they would be spreading happiness and change to everyone around them wherever they went, "Jeff recalls. "A little sunshine goes a long way, and we hope these children choose to have positive attitudes that will ultimately improve their community, family, friends, work and school.
Through the help of an internal Del Sol employee and her husband, who was serving in the military in Iraq, Del Sol was able to coordinate a meaningful donation of product and school supplies to dozens of Iraqi schools throughout the war-torn country. "The greatest thing about owning a business is having the opportunity to bless thousands of people."
The 310' X 10" well, to which the Del Sol family so generously contributed, was drilled in the Chyulu Valley of Kenya. Thanks to the generosity of the Del Sol team and the 'Miracle Well' of Chyulu, Kenya, large plots of fast-growing vegetables are being planted that will avert disaster and starvation for these grateful people.
Making Smiles in Uganda, Africa!
As part of a dental humanitarian trip to teach and treat P-6 school children, Del Sol donated its color-changing rings to bring some additional smiles to the dental patients. Uganda school girls showed off their Del Sol rings, which they received after receiving dental treatment. Primary Public School K-7, Wakiso District, Kampala, Uganda, Africa. The rings were donated by Del Sol Headquarters through Tom and Debbie Sorensen.
David B. Pedersen Foundation
The David B. Pedersen Foundation began three years ago, and it has since awarded over $50,000 in scholarships. Former Del Sol CEO, Bob Pedersen, and wife, Catherine, including current company President, Jeff Pedersen, and his seven other siblings, created and organized this foundation in honor of their youngest son and brother, David, who passed away in September 2005. The foundation awards scholarships to outstanding students who have "bounced back" from life's obstacles and shown resilience and achievement in scholastics and being drug free.
The David B. Pedersen Foundation works closely with the Granite Education Foundation and several other amazing teachers throughout Utah, including Taylorsville teacher, Leigh VandenAkker, who spearheads an incredible growth and learning program at Taylorsville High School, from which several applying students are selected for scholarships.
Over the years, the David B. Pedersen Foundation has received great support from several Del Sol employees, who have made very generous, private contributions. All the foundation's funds come from private donations.
Del Sol's corporate headquarters and international stores strive to donate products and service to several local and national organizations on a constant basis; including, Utah Food Bank, Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Salvation Army, Cheerful Givers, LDS Humanitarian Services, and others.
Several thousand products were recently donated through Cheerful Givers, which were then circulated as birthday bags to food shelves and shelters so that parents living in poverty can give their child a birthday gift. Read more about the donation on the Cheerful Giver blog at http://www.cheerfulgivers.org/2009/02/del-sol-brightens-lives/Fun, Joy, Smiles and Memories derive from so many founts of human effort. Jeff and Del Sol are grateful to provide this happiness to people everywhere in more ways than one. Everyone makes a difference at Del Sol. No matter how big or small people think their contribution may be; it ultimately makes the greatest difference of all.
